MTV Moon Person Featured in Lighting & Sound America - Oct 2021

For its 40th anniversary, cable channel MTV celebrated in style – with an all-star spectacular showcasing everyone from Madonna and Cyndi Lauper to Billie Eilish and Lil Nas X.

At the heart of it all was a huge inflatable replica of MTV’s iconic Moon Person, custom-built by Landmark Creations. Consisting of over 5,000 pieces of fabric carefully sewn together, the inflatable mascot towered 60 feet high and spanned 112 feet in width. In its center, an open doorway served as an impressive entrance.

According to set designer Julian Himede, “it took more than 600 hours to design the pattern” for Moon Person – and another 1,000 hours to sew it.

Landmark “is very well equipped to handle something of this scale,” says Himede. “They have a laser cut out every single pattern. A human being, behind a sewing machine, sews the patterns; the machine is connected to an iPad that tells each person which part of the pattern they are sewing together.” The result, Himede says, is precision accuracy. Read the article about the Moon Person in Lighting & Sound America.
